IGDA To Present Game Developers Choice Awards At 2001 Game Developers Conference

Formerly Known as the "Spotlight Awards," Honorees are Selected by Industry Peers for Their Outstanding Work in Game Development

SAN FRANCISCO - January 10, 2001 - The International Game Developers Association (IGDA) and the CMP Game Media Group today announced that this year's Game Developers Choice Awards (formerly known as the "Spotlight Awards"), will be held at the Game Developers Conference in San Jose, California on March 23, 2001. The Game Developers Choice Awards provide the opportunity for game developers to honor each other, highlight the people behind the scenes and recognize and celebrate the art form of games. Game developers and IGDA members are able to make nominations from January 10th to February 9th at the dedicated Game Developers Choice Awards.

Every now and then it's nice to lift our heads out of crunch mode long enough to salute colleagues whose current achievements remind us of our own ideals and high hopes," said Hal Barwood, project lead, LucasArts Entertainment. "The original Spotlight Awards provided us a chance to do exactly that, and their renewal this year as the Game Developers Choice Awards means an excellent opportunity to recognize our peers for the great work they've done.

The Game Developers Choice Awards take a unique approach to honoring accomplishment in the industry. The awards focus on specific advances in the art form, as well as contributions made to the industry by the community, through the following categories:

Lifetime Achievement Award
The First Penguin Award (honoring risk-taking in the industry)
Rookie Studio Award
IGDA Award for Community Contribution
Original Game Character of the Year
Excellence in Audio
Excellence in Game Design
Excellence in Level Design
Excellence in Programming
Excellence in Visual Arts
Game of the Year

In addition to these categories, a number of "Game Spotlight Awards" will be presented without respect to game genre or platform; these awards recognize games that demonstrate innovation and bring a fresh element to the game development craft. Developers choose to bestow a Game Spotlight Award on a product because they believe it contains outstanding creative or technical contributions to the field of electronic gaming.

The Game Developers Choice Awards is all about peer to peer recognition," said Jason Della Rocca, program director, IGDA. "We are taking a forward-looking approach to these awards, making it accessible to developers from around the world and rewarding developers for their efforts that help to create the real heroes of the game industry.

The Game Developers Choice Awards have been developed with the advice and support of several top developers, who serve on the awards advisory committee. They include:

  • Hap Aziz, chief technical officer, Onion Skin Brainware
  • Hal Barwood, project lead, LucasArts Entertainment
  • Louis Castle, executive vp, Westwood Studios
