Nominees Announced For Game Developers Choice Awards

Game Developers to be Honored for Innovation and the Advancement of the Art Form of Games

SAN FRANCISCO - February 22, 2001 - The International Game Developers Association (IGDA) and the CMP Game Media Group today announced the nominees for this year's Game Developers Choice Awards. Formerly known as the "Spotlight Awards," the Game Developers Choice Awards provide the opportunity for developers to honor those that have made creative and technical contributions to electronic gaming, highlight the people behind the scenes and celebrate the art form of games. The awards ceremony will be held during the Game Developers Conference in San Jose, California on March 23, 2001 at the Civic Auditorium, starting at 7:30 PM

"The Game Developers Choice Awards is the opportunity for developers to look into their community and give kudos to those whose efforts and creativity are changing how games are developed, and how they are played and enjoyed," said Jason Della Rocca, program director, IGDA.

The nominees, who were chosen by IGDA members and other game developers, represent countries from around the world, such as the UK, Japan, Sweden, Norway, France and Canada. Their games were developed for multiple platforms including PCs, consoles and the Web. Games that landed their makers on the nomination list range from small independently developed ones like "BLiX" to the epic "Shenmue", which took over a hundred developers and a $70 million budget to create.

The members of the development community who chose the nominees did not have an easy task," said Alan Yu, GDC director, "These individuals are not only the best in their respective areas, but are driving the gaming industry forward with creative thinking and risk taking.

The categories were created to focus on specific advances in the art form, as well as contributions made to the industry. Categories include areas of Excellence in Audio, Game Design, Level Design, Programming, Visual Arts, a Lifetime Achievement Award, Community Contribution, Original Game Character of the Year, Rookie Studio Award, a 'Penguin' Award honoring risk-taking and Game of the Year.
